Washington, D.C.-based journalist Alan Bjerga covers the agricultural industry and related legislation and policy development for Bloomberg News. Recognized for his reports on famine in Africa and associated U.S. food aid programs, Alan Bjerga has received numerous journalism awards for his domestic and international coverage. In 2012, he provided extensive reporting on the record droughts in America’s Corn Belt region and how the poor growing season could affect global food supply and costs. 

Raised on a farm in Central Minnesota, Alan Bjerga earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and English from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and a Master’s degree in Mass Communication from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. After serving as a reporter and editor for his schools’ student-run newspapers, he started his postgraduate career as a staff writer for the St. Paul Pioneer Press in St. Paul, Minnesota, before accepting reporting jobs with the Argus Leader of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and The Wichita Eagle of Wichita, Kansas. Prior to joining Bloomberg in 2006, Alan Bjerga served as a Washington, D.C., correspondent for Knight Ridder predecessor The McClatchy Company. In 2011, he wrote Endless Appetites: How the Commodities Casino Creates Hunger and Unrest, in which he examines the causes and effects of the 21st century global food crisis.

For his work over the years, Alan Bjerga has garnered praise and awards from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, the Overseas Press Club of America, the New York Press Club, and the Kansas Press Association. He also received the North American Agricultural Journalists’ top writing award, the Glenn Cunningham Agricultural Journalist of the Year, for his reporting from Washington, D.C., for The Wichita Eagle. In 2012, Alan Bjerga joined Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies as an Adjunct Professor in the Master of Professional Studies in Journalism program.
